Shoulder pain when working above hand: distribution of load

In the case of upper hand work not only the weight determines the load: reach height, distance, duration and repetition also count in your work plan. Make the most difficult task concrete and discuss temporary adjustments. Continue to use feasible movements and assess the effect. A ladder, pause or division of labour is not a substitute for investigation when symptoms change.

Start with the task that is really tricky

My work is heavy says less than I hold a tool above shoulder height for twenty minutes. For a useful plan you want to know at what point the problem arises. Is that when lifting material, while holding or not until the end of a service? Do you have to reach far or work high next to your body?

The Rotator Cuff guideline advises to include working requirements in the assessment and allows for ergonomic adjustments as a possibility. That is not a guarantee that one workplace will solve symptoms. It gives a reason to look seriously at the task and the feasibility of agreements.

Describe one average service, including the light parts. This makes it visible where you have room to alternate and what adaptation requires help from a colleague or supervisor.

View height, distance, strength and time separately

A practical way to dissect a work task is to describe four parts separately. What height do you work at? How far is the material from you? How much power is it gonna take? And how long does this happen without interruption? This classification is a conversational tool, not a medical formula that calculates safe load.

Think example: when filling a high cabinet you might be able to store the heaviest material lower. For a ceiling job, the correct working height may be relevant, but any increase must also be safe for the task. An improvised unstable surface is not a responsible shoulder adjustment.

Don't just ask for lighter work. Explain which part needs to change. A lighter box that you need to reach farther can still be clumsy. Day-to-day practice determines whether a measure actually helps.

Modify temporarily while you keep moving

Thuisarts advises to reduce heavy tasks and long-term upper hand work, to alternate tasks and gradually to do more. At the same time, the advice remains to use the shoulder. This requires customization when your profession requires a lot of arm use.

Choose not only what is temporarily less, but also what can be. It may be feasible to prepare, check, work at lower heights or short execution blocks. Discuss whether this can really be arranged within the organisation; an individual advice has little value if planning makes it impossible.

Let the reaction weigh in without seeing any pain as failure. If an agreed task results in more and more symptoms or job losses each time, the appointment must be adjusted. Talk about when that happens and who you can go to.

A work interview with clear appointments

A discussion becomes more concrete with a proposal consisting of three parts: the task, the temporary adaptation and the moment of evaluation. You don't have to share a complete diagnosis yourself to tell me what work is going to be difficult. The company doctor can help translate the medical assessment into employability and work advice.

Bring practical boundaries, too. Can a colleague take over a task without overburdening himself? Can you change the material? Is a shorter upper hand block really possible or is the same production expected in less time? The latter is a different arrangement than less load.

Write down who's taking care of what. If you have to build more quietly but no one divides the tasks, the plan will be dependent on accidental space in the service. A short, concrete agreement is better to follow than a general message to be careful.

Use a Work Task Card

Fill out this schematic together for the two toughest parts of your work.

QuestionExample of a useful fill-in
What action?Place material on a high shelf
What's tricky?Reach height and repeat holding
What else can we do?Save lighter parts lower
What remains possible?Preparation and work under shoulder height
Who's helping?Co-worker or manager regulates division of labour
What are we evaluating?Executable, symptom response and necessary help

This is an example of thinking, not a requirement for a particular function. A painter, hairdresser and warehouse worker have several options. Use the map to make missing information visible.

Do not compare the evaluation with pain alone. Also see if you have to continually compensate, need extra help or lose the adjustment after half a shift. The best deal is one that can be followed in the real thing.

Practice and work hearing in the same overview

A training programme is added to existing work. That's why you're treating what you've been doing with the arm that week. It can be illogical to weigh up exercises when a busy working period begins, without consciously thinking about it.

Ask which function supports the exercises and how they connect to your task. Is it about being able to hold on longer, controlled lifting or anything else? It should also be clear when the plan will be reviewed. There is no generally safe number of overhand repetitions that can be taken from a blog.

New symptoms after an incident, sudden loss of strength or increasing stiffness deserve assessment. If such a change does not automatically follow the same work appointment. A work plan helps to organize stress, but does not eliminate diagnostic uncertainty.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop working on shoulder pain?

That depends on your duties, the symptoms and the assessment. Sometimes you can work temporarily differently; sometimes more restrictions are needed. Discuss concrete actions with employer and company doctor. Only the word shoulder pain doesn't tell me if your entire work is feasible.

Is a higher work platform always better?

No. It can change the reach height, but must be safe and suitable for work. Other parts such as distance, weight and repetition remain important. Have workplace adjustments assessed within the normal safety arrangements of your profession.

How much break do I need?

There is no universal shoulder rule for that. Describe how long a task is now feasible and what variety is possible. Make a trial appointment and evaluate it. A break helps little if after that the same heavy amount has to be done in much less time.

Can shockwave solve my work problem?

A device treatment doesn't change your job. Whether medical treatment is appropriate depends on diagnosis and evidence. Working arrangements, activity and evaluation remain separate elements. Ask what contribution each treatment is expected to make to your specific goal.
