with your story.

Focused shockwave

Focused energy.
More possibilities.

Focused shockwave deserves a broader perspective. Its applications extend beyond tendon symptoms to muscle conditions and specialist bone care. For back, meniscus and ligament symptoms, we carefully assess what treatment may offer. Expected benefits and the strength of the evidence vary by condition.

Ligament symptoms

Ligament symptoms involve both pain and stability. We assess whether additional treatment fits your injury and recovery plan. Evidence for shockwave varies by condition and remains limited.

Our approach to ligament symptoms

Muscles & trigger points

In myofascial pain, sensitive muscle points can make it difficult to move. Research shows that shockwave can reduce pain, although not every study finds additional benefit.

Shockwave for muscle pain

Tendons & plantar fascia

From heel pain to certain tendon conditions, shockwave may form part of a treatment plan following an appropriate diagnosis. Its potential benefit varies by condition.

Nerve symptoms

We also discuss radial shockwave with certain nerve symptoms. This application has been studied especially in mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. We first assess the cause and discuss the possible added value.

When moving hurts, sometimes your world gets smaller. We'll start with what's bothering you and what you'd like to do again.

More space
to move.

In case of persistent back symptoms and discopathy, we look beyond the name on a scan. We assess whether focused shockwave can contribute to fewer symptoms, in addition to a plan for movement and load. The basis for this application is still under development.

Your story & assessment

What's going on, what have you tried and what do you want to be able to do? A careful investigation gives direction.

02

A substantiated choice

We discuss what approach can fit, what you can expect and what it costs. You know what you're choosing.

03

Movement & review

Where appropriate, we combine treatment with exercises and advice. We'll monitor your progress and adjust it.

Two techniques.
One careful consideration.

You don't have to choose a device. Understanding the difference will help you make a conscious choice.

Focused shockwave

Targeted. Wide deployment.

Focused shockwave bundles acoustic energy into a chosen area. In addition to muscle and symptoms of the tendons, the technique is investigated for back, meniscus and ligaments symptoms. Also within specialized bone care has focused shockwave applications. We translate those possibilities into a treatment choice that fits your diagnosis.

More about focused shockwave
Medical diameter: a wide contact head gives acoustic waves through the skin. The waves come together under the contact plane in an oblong focus zone.

  2. Contact gel
  3. Focus zone
Medical-technical illustration · not on scale
  1. Electromagnetic generated

In the technique shown, an electromagnetic source moves a membrane. A reflector in the handpiece bundles the acoustic waves.

  2. Via gel to the tissue

Contact gel connects the contact plane to the skin. Thus the acoustic pressure pulses are transmitted from the handpiece to the tissue.

  3. Together in a focus zone

The waves come together in a demarcated area. The location and dimensions of that zone depend on the handpiece and the applicator.

Technical explanation of the manufacturer (opens in a new tab) ↗

Radial pressure waves and focused shock waves are physically different. Deeper, stronger or both aren't automatically better. The diagnosis and the justification determine the balance.

Supplementary therapy

Shockwave + EMTT.
Targeted combined.

For long-term symptoms of tendons in the shoulder without calcification One study showed better pain and function results with focused shockwave plus EMTT than with focused shockwave plus placebo EMTT.

A targeted investigation finding. Whether this combination is appropriate requires a personal consideration of evidence, guidelines and alternatives.

All FAQs
Is the ultrasound really free?

With a paid intake, we don't charge extra costs for ultrasound, when ultrasound is clinically indicated and technically feasible. So the intake itself is paid for. We discuss the consultation fee before you confirm your appointment. Any treatments are excluded from this offer and are discussed separately.

What can EMTT add to shockwave?

In long-term symptoms of tendons in the shoulder without calcification, one study showed more favourable pain and function results with focused shockwave plus EMTT than with focused shockwave plus placebo EMTT. That doesn't mean that the combination works better with every symptom. We're assessing whether the potential added value fits your situation.

Do I have to choose between focused and radial?

No. That choice is part of the assessment of your symptom. The techniques differ in the way they transfer energy. Your clinician explains why a technique fits or doesn't. Using both is not automatically better.

Is shockwave only for symptoms from the tendons?

No. We also assess symptoms of discopathy, meniscus problems and ligaments, in addition to muscle and tendon symptoms. For these wider applications, the basis differs and additional research is needed. Outside our clinics, focused shockwave also has a role in specialized bone care. The diagnosis determines which treatment fits. Look at the applications and what they mean to you.

How effective is shockwave?

Shockwave may reduce pain and improve functioning when appropriately diagnosed. This has also been investigated outside symptoms of the tendons, for example at painful muscle points. A general success rate does not reflect the differences between conditions. We make it concrete: what effect do we expect in your symptom and when do we assess your progress?
