What are ligaments?
Ligaments are bonds of connective tissue that connect bones and help steer a joint. Think of kneebands, ankle bracelets and tyres around the elbow. A strain, partial damage and complete tear require different considerations. Also the phase of recovery and the feeling that a joint is sinking count as well.
Considering ligament symptoms too
Focused shockwave is more widely used and studied than only in tendons. Therefore, we also take persistent ligament symptoms seriously as a possible focus area. In selected situations, positive results have been described, but the limited studies do not warrant a general assessment of the effectiveness of tyre injury. The diagnosis, stability and progress of your recovery determine the balance.
What do we know about focused shockwave?
There are small studies and patient descriptions for ligament symptoms. A publication about a partially damaged medial collateral ligament of the knee describes improvement after a combination of care, including focused shockwave. One case cannot demonstrate the separate effect. A retrospective study from 2025 on 63 baseball launchers with symptoms from the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow found more beneficial results with shockwave plus physiotherapy. There was no randomization. These are clues, not broad evidence for all ligaments.
After a cross-ligament operation: a situation of your own
A randomised study in 65 patients studied focused shockwave as an adjunct to rehabilitation following an advanced-cruciate ligament reconstruction. Compared to standard rehabilitation, there were favourable outcomes for, among other things, sport resumption. There was no false treatment. It's about an operation knee with a tendon graft. It doesn't prove that a fully torn own cruciate ligament grows back together by shockwave. Treatment after surgery is always tailored to the arrangements with the surgical team.
Stability counts as well as pain
Less pain does not automatically mean that a tyre is fully loadable again. That's why we're also looking at stability, strength, motion control and the activities you want to resume. We base a decision on sport resumption not only on how the place feels after treatment. The type of injury and total rehabilitation remain leading.
This is how we discuss a treatment plan.
During the investigation, we will map the origin and course of your symptoms. We will discuss which guidance you are already receiving and whether additional assessment is needed. If shockwave is proposed, we explain why, what uncertainty there is and how we follow progress. Exercises, load advice and possible medical guidance are included.
In case of new injury or increasing instability
On the same day, call your GP or the GP emergency post for a fresh knee injury with rapidly increasing swelling, unable to support or a knee that is locked. If you have repeated slippages or increasing symptoms, contact your GP or clinician. A regular shockwave appointment is not a substitute for research into a possible serious tyre injury.
A focused first step
By the paid initial consultation Let's see what fits your situation. ultrasound is included at no extra cost when relevant; the outcome is always assessed in conjunction with the clinical trial. You will receive an explanation of the options and costs before choosing a follow-up.
This information is general. Whether shockwave is appropriate for you requires a personal assessment. There's no guarantee of recovery.
